New York Deli News: authentic Big Apple fare

When you walk into the New York Deli News, you’ll see a sign proclaiming: “Leaving Denver; Entering New York.” While this long-time favorite in southeast Denver looks nothing like a real New York deli, it does serve authentic fare: All the pastrami, ham, kosher salami and other staples are brought straight from the Big Apple.
Think of Dr. Brown’s soda and egg creams. Think of lox and bagels, fresh chopped liver, gefilte fish and cold borsht with sour cream. This is the real deal, and those who have developed a love of such comfort food will be glad that Denver has at least one place that serves it.
Those left cold at the sight of liver, tongue or fish patties packed in jelly can find other deli delicacies. A lot of people come for the sandwiches, and you can get a basic tuna salad for $8.25.
You’ll pay a hefty $10.95 for the grilled Reuben, but if you order the triple-decker combo, you’ll get heaps of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and the requisite Russian dressing. These sandwiches measure four inches or more, and they make your jaws stretch wide!
If you don’t want to stretch your jaws — or your dining-out budget — try the early-bird dinner specials from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. every day except Sunday. Most of the entrées, such as the roasted half-chicken and the roast beef, cost $6.95, with the fresh fish$2 more. You can get some great chicken noodle soup, salad or cole slaw, potato and vegetable along with them.
The menu changes in the morning from 7 to 11, when the New York Deli News serves breakfast. Eggs, potatoes, toast, bacon and coffee cost $5.79. On Friday, you can sit down to the eggs Benedict for $6.95, and on other days you’ll find other specials.
A lot of people can’t leave the New York Deli News without trying one of its delicious desserts. There’s New York cheesecake, of course, and the black and white cookie is huge. Westword magazine gave it a Best Of award in 2001, and it’s still just as good.
Almost all the food here is. And the service is quick and friendly, the portions are huge, so what’s not to like?
