Wynkoop Brewing Co.: good beer, good times
Published: Jun 19, 2009
Leading the resurgence of LoDo Denver out of urban decay, the Wynkoop Brewing Company opened in 1988 in the historic J.S. Brown building when present Mayor John Hickenlooper first started serving the public ... some very good beer.
The Wynkoop was Denver’s first brewpub and remains one of the world's largest, annually producing as many as 4,330 barrels of beer.
It’s good beer, too, and favorites include Sagebrush Stout, Splatz Porter and the flagship Railyard Ale. Patty’s Chile Beer — made with Anaheim chiles and smoked Ancho peppers — won the bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival in the Fruit and Vegetable Beer category.
The Wynkoop continues to innovate, brewing up some unusual but very tasty experiments. Westword Magazine liked these suds enough to give the Wynkoop the Best Brewpub award two years running.
There’s plenty of food to go along with all the libations. You can get a Natural Beef Burger, vegan Sloppy Joe or a barbecue pork sandwich, each for $8.95. The ‘Koop will suggest just the right brew to go with them.
For entrees, you might try the Colorado lamb, at $19.95, or the Alaskan King salmon, also $19.95. The specialties cost less: The $10.75 shepherd’s pie is popular, and so is the $11.25 Bangers & Mashers. And there’s a Brew Plate special each day.
If good beer, food and conversation aren’t enough to keep you occupied for hours, you can always go upstairs to shoot some darts or rack up the balls on one of the 22 pool tables.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, there's an improv comedy show at the Impulse Theater downstairs.
