Dougherty’s Neighborhood Restaurant and Pub serves delicious food in its unpretentious side-street setting in Denver’s upcoming South Broadway district.  If it’s not the perfect neighborhood spot to eat, drink and hang out, it’s pretty close.

Irish in name, and in many of its dishes, you’ll find such favorites here as potato soup, for $3 if you want a cup or $5 for a bowl.  The Irish Goat Cheese Salad, with sweet red onions and sun-dried cherries, is very tasty, and it goes for $8.  The Shepherd’s Pie hides a lot of delicious lamb stew and mashed potatoes inside its cheese crust, and costs $11.  And call the fish and chips fried a crispy golden-brown, for ten bucks, a classic; you’ll probably just say it’s very good, and that’s the whole point.

Dougherty’s, though, doesn’t mind mixing it up a little in order to please.  Its pappadams — a grilled flatbread – take their name from India’s cuisine, and not anything served on the Emerald Isle.  The Peter Piper Burger comes packed with jalapenos and cream cheese, and is topped with pepper jack and served with a chipotle mayonnaise.  It’s only one of Dougherty’s half-pound signature stuffed burgers, all of which are priced at $9.

If you like things very simple, lunch here is a pretty good deal.  The specialty sandwiches — such as the hot turkey and cheese – come packed between the grilled flatbread with lettuce, tomato and red onion, and are served with the potato soup, all for $4.95.

As word spreads about this comfortable pub, next to a fine old church and not far from the historic Mayan Theatre, it is becoming perhaps the nicest place in whole neighborhood to relax and meet up with friends.  The crowd here, like many of the nearby residents, is mostly young.  Young, old or middle-aged, though, you’ll probably like sitting here for hours, hoisting a glass of Guinness or sitting out on the porch talking with people and watching the world go by.
