Fresh Fish Company: 28 years of living up to its name

Published: Mar 24, 2009

For over 28 years people have been coming to the Fresh Fish Company for good, basic seafood. And the fare, after all that time, remains fresh. No wonder the south Denver eatery was voted Denver's Best Seafood Restaurant by the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post.

With rapid-fire modern transportation, the crab legs, mako shark, mahi mahi and other fish have only gotten only fresher. Some might not say that's true of the décor, with its vinyl-backed booths and stained glass lighting fixtures. Others, however, will find the plain wooden tables, spotlessly polished floors and the 20 glowing aquariums to be timeless.

The Fresh Fish Company packs people in night after night by offering more than 20 varieties of fish at a mid-range of prices: you can get rainbow trout for $17.75 while a 1.2-pound Maine lobster will set you back $29.95. In between are Ono from Hawaii, delicate Orange Roughy and Barramundi taken from near the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Order your fish grilled over a mesquite fire, which imparts a distinctive dusky flavor, and choose from sauces such as a tangy lemon caper.

Carnivores can put their forks to filet mignon, prime rib or steaks. There is pasta, too, but vegetarians probably won't find this place a home away from home. Dessert lovers will have a good time with the key lime pie, crème brulee and chocolate raspberry fantasy.

Sunday brunch is an extravagance of all the shrimp and crab legs you can eat, along with fresh doughnuts and a chocolate fountain, for $22.50. Friday Feasts offer Filet Mignon & King Crab legs and other surf and turf combinations, for $28.95. The Fresh Fish Company accommodates private parties, from intimate gatherings to groups as large as 250.  Because this restaurant goes out of its way to give people what they want, expect to see it thriving for another 28 years.

The Fresh Fish Company is open for lunch Monday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dinner hours are Monday through Thursday,  5 to 9:30 p.m.; Friday, 5 to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, 4:30 to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday brunch runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
