Maggiano's Little Italy serves very good food at reasonable prices

Published: Apr 2, 2009

Visit Maggiano's Little Italy and you may think you've been transported to 1950s New York. Photos of the old gang hang on the wall. Frank and Dino croon out their songs. Best of all, the checkered red-and-white tablecloths are piled with tasty Italian dishes of such generous portions that almost everyone will be leaving with doggie bags.

All right, so this is downtown Denver in the 21st century, and this popular restaurant in the Pavilions just off the 16th Street Mall Promenade is actually one of many Maggianos across the United States. Still, it feels so much like a local institution that the regulars keep coming back week after week.

Big and bustling though it is, it manages somehow to feel both warm and intimate. The servers are professional, and they do everything they can to make you feel at home. Then, of course, there's all that food.

It's not great food, of the chi-chi variety you might find in a more upscale Italian place that will leave you both broke and hungry. The chicken picatta, veal parmigiana and other traditional dishes, however, are very good — and that's good enough.

Garlic and tomatoes seem to make a perfect marriage here, whether sauced over the delicious four cheese ravioli appetizer or the showcase Beef Braciole. If you're craving a steak, you can order a New York Strip, while seafood lovers can try everything from salmon sautéed in fresh herbs to Lobster Fettucine. There are soups such as Tuscan Orzo and Sausage, sides of the usual pasta and a classic Caesar salad.

It might seem impossible to eat dessert after so much hearty fare, but Maggiano's mostly happy (and stuffed) patrons somehow do: chocolate zucotto cake, tiramisu and a huge crème brûlée nearly seven inches in diameter.

Prices range from about $15.75 to $21.95 for most entrees, except the steaks. A full-order Caesar salad is $10.95, and sides such as pasta will cost a little extra.

Larger parties in the mood for a feast can dine family style, with per-person pricing and dishes that keep on coming.

Whatever you choose at this moderately priced restaurant, you won't pay all that much — and you'll probably keep coming back, too, along with everyone else.

Maggiano's has a second location in southern Denver, 7401 South Clinton St..
