Elway's: Eat great food, meet great people

Published: Apr 20, 2009

There's a possibility you might see John at Elway's, but that's not the best reason to visit  this popular upscale restaurant in Cherry Creek. Neither is the very good chance that you'll have a great meal.

What really has kept drawing devoted patrons to Elway's since its opening in 2001?  Call it ambience. Call it the fun factor.  Call it a blending of food, drink, service, layout, décor and interesting people. It's a synergy that works.

Most of the people there seem to have money, and you might expect a certain stuffiness.  But hang out in the open-square bar having a beer or savoring some of the best crab cakes you've ever had. You'll see accountants and flight attendants happily mingling with real estate moguls, financiers, sports luminaries and other big shots — who mostly seem  warm and welcoming.

You might find that the two women drinking wine next to you are from Kazakhstan and are speaking Russian, while the man on the other side is a charming French-Israeli poet.  Hang out a little longer, and you might find yourself making lifelong friends you'll want invite to dinner.

That's what John Elway would have wanted after he stopped leading the Broncos to Superbowl victories and opened this restaurant (and the Elway's downtown).

Make your way into the wood-paneled dining room and you'll find starters such as tuna tartare and barbecue ribs before moving on to the rack of lamb or swordfish entrees.

If you're one of those flight attendants, you can dine without maxing out your credit card by ordering the salmon instead, or the delicious short rib off-the-bone — each for $20. The prime beef enchiladas actually cost a few dollars less. Sides are extra, but the portions are big.

On an expense account? Why not try one of the signature steaks? You can get an 8-ounce New York strip for $30 or a 12-ounce filet for $39. Got an appetite like one of the Broncos who sometimes dine here? Order the 33-ounce porterhouse — more than two pounds — for $50.

Ready for dessert? If it happens to be your birthday, you cake will arrive with Roman candle sparking and lighting up the room.  It's symbolic of the measures Elway's takes to make people happy for a few hours and light up their lives.
