My Brother's Bar: no frills, lots of history
Published: Jun 13, 2009
Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac may or may not have been one of America’s best writers, but he thought that My Brother’s Bar was one of the best places to hang out in Denver. So it has been for many others at what's said to be Denver’s oldest eating and drinking establishment. This is a a very simple pub serving the simplest of food in a very laid-back atmosphere.
You can sit at one of the few tables facing the classic bar in the small front room or in the slightly larger back room. You might expect to find memorabilia on the walls of the glory days past, but you won’t. However, the worn walls themselves seem to hold memories of ten of thousands of burgers eaten here and whole rivers of beer and hard liquor downed by serious drinkers and bar-goers with the gift for gab.
You have to order from one of the menus posted on those old walls. Some declare the Johnny Burger — packed with jalapeño cream cheese, Swiss cheese and grilled onions — the city's best burger. It’s not quite that good, but it certainly is tasty. A one-third pounder costs $6.50, while you can get a double for $9.50. If you want it made out of buffalo instead of beef, add a $1.50 more.
If you expect it to arrive on a plate with a nice presentation, think again. This is an ultra-no-frills pub, and your waiter will bring your burger all wrapped up in paper, like something you’d get at McDonald’s. A set-up of relish, pickles, onions, ketchup and mustard, taking up a lot of room on the rough-hewn, lacquered table, comes with it.
Almost all the sandwiches are in the $5 range, except for the grilled cheese at $4.25. You can wash it all down with one of the good beers on tap. You’ll have to decide if you’ll fit in with the eclectic crowd of yuppies, families, artists, tourists and old-time professional drinkers. My Brother’s Bar is a love-it or leave-it kind of place, and you might find yourself doing either.

My Brother's Bar has captured this corner for decades.
If you give these bartenders your name, chances are they'll remember you the next time you walk in the door.
Your great-grandparents might have eaten hamburgers in this room.
This is the only menu you'll find here, so bring your distance glasses if you want to read it from your table.
