In November 2009, Denver downtowners began noticing upright pianos placed somewhat randomly about the 16th Street Mall area. Each one was painted with vibrant colors and diverse themes, and promoted as public art. Better yet, the pianos were fully functional. Anyone could play them at no charge…and did. The pianos were such a hit during their holiday run that they were brought back as a permanent series of constantly changing displays.
The piano project, called "Your Keys to the City," was designed to promote fun, hands-on interaction within the cityscape.Six months after its standing-ovation debut, an encore display added three uprights to the mix for a total of 10, all painted by local artists. Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP) conceived and coordinated the creative project, saying: "The concept is designed to encourage residents, employees and tourists in Downtown Denver to interact with their public spaces in new and spontaneous ways—while contributing to the vibrancy within our urban core." One DDP rep says, “We want the public to be able to sit down and crank out a tune!”
The idea generates an enjoyable, spontaneous experience and promotes friendly interaction when impromptu concerts attract a crowd. Retailers located on the 16th Street Mall also reap benefits. “'Your Keys to the City’ allowed us to meet new neighbors and customers,” says Kaye Lyssey with Cook’s Fresh Market. “The piano on our corner really opened our eyes to the surprising amount and types of talent we have here in Denver.”
Look for pianos along the 16th Street Mall on every block between Court and Lawrence streets, some on sidewalks, others in the median areas. After several weeks on display, pianos are stored and repainted before their next public appearance. No set schedule is in place beyond the May 21-June 18, 2010 exhibition, but anyone planning a visit downtown specifically to see the pianos can check the DDP's event calendar at http://www.livedowntowndenver.com/happenings/ or call 303-534-6161.
HelloMetro Tip: Love people-watching along with piano jam sessions? Stop in at one of the restaurants along the 16th Street Mall with windows or patio seating, including Marlowe’s, Primebar or Paramount Café. You'll have a front-row seat along with some great chow.
