Heatherwood Elementary School Reviews

I have nothing but good things to say about this school... My son who has Autism, has progressed so well over the last 4-5 years. His improved quality of life and happiness is a testament to to the faculty & staff @ Heatherwood.

this school had the opportunity to become truly Great when Horizons teachers spent hours endeavoring to train them as William Glasser, Alfie Kohn and Gardener would teach. Alas, they did not implement the suggestions and they remain an ordinary, 'good' elementary school. I personally would not choose this school for my child- there is too much emphasis on rewards/punishments, lack of parent involvement and a lack of student self-governance.

My son entered kindergarten at Heatherwood mid year. He was doing fairly well at his previous school, but his new teacher told me he didn't know any of his basics. They were saying he had a possible cognitive problem or ADD. I actually started to believe them. I took him to Sylvian Learning Center. Three weeks after being at Sylvian he could read, do math and knew all of his letters and numbers. I pulled him out of Heatherwood to homeschool, it has been about seven weeks and now he reads at above a first grade level. I found out other kids were bullying him and nothing was being done to stop it, no wonder he couldn't concentrate. I am disgusted with this school, and especially his pm kindergarten teacher. I would not recomend this school to anyone.

Excellent school. Asks a ton from it's parents, though. Not your typical volunteer situation.

I am not a parent, I am a former student. My name is Kristin. I went to Heatherwood about 7 years ago. I am now a freshman in college. Heatherwood is an open space elementary school. A lot of people think that this hinders childrens learning, but it actually helped me. I was able to learn how to focus really well because I had to block out sounds around me and focus on what I was doing. Also, later on I wasn't distracted if someone came into the classroom or I heard noise out in the hall. Once again I was able to block out sounds around me. The teachers were also really attentative and cared about the students. They taught many different methods and were open to suggestions from kids. They also forced you to work hard and gave you a fair amount of homework. If students were having trouble with reading the teacher would help you privately or they would set you up with a school certified tutor. They also corrected grammar and spelling mistakes that students made in class. If the student made a mistake the teacher would address it in front of the whole class, so that the whole class would learn from the mistake. Heatherwood is a great school and I am so thankful that my parents sent me there. The teachers would also help with spelling.
