Axl Academy Reviews

I love this school so far. The school is small and thus my child gets a lot of individualized attention. The class sizes are kept small and my child is having a great time at this school. Her teacher is wonderful and I love the principal and her involvement with all the kids.

We are not going to return next year. My child has fallen behind in several areas. We had such high hopes. Poor administrator. Teachers are ok. Too many negatives.

Unfortunately, the previous parent's post rings true for me as well. I was also told repeatedly that my son was doing well and right on track on all of the learning targets. However, after transferring him back to his old school, I found out that he was actually performing behind a whole grade level. After extensive work between myself and his new teachers, he is back on track.

I think although AXL has good intensions the school and its teachers need a lot of work. My daughter attended the first year AXL opened. She was a first grader at the time. I was told she was doing a good job and that she was right on track. It was not until leaving the school and transferring my daughter to a new school when we realized that she was not only struggling in school, but the basics she should have known were totally missed. She did a great job signing songs and learning about Ants, and Bee s, but was not being taught the proper fundamentals in order to succeed in an environment outside of AXL. We have spend thousands of dollars in order to get her caught up to grade level. I'm just glad I got her out in time to correct the problem.

As a parent with a child into the second year of this school I would have to agree with the previous review. Discipline is an issue and it is not consistant. It just depends on who the child is and if you have complained to the administration and teacher (your child is retaliated against.)I would use extreme caution in deciding on this school. When a child no longer wants to go to school there is something terribly wrong.

This is our first year at axle and so far so good the student led confrence went well with both my boys I always feel welcome at the school and my kids are learning tons of new things. I hope this little school keeps doing what they are doing.

I am a parent of two students at AXL. I fell in love with all the dreams and hopes for this school. I must say I'm a little disappointed with the vice principal and how teachers, parents and students are treated by her. She is completley disrespectful and and abuses her authority. I know this first hand because I volunteer regularly at the school and I have seen it . I was surprised to see how many teachers didnt return this year and I strongly believe it was due to this person. Its unfortunate that both of the teachers that were supposed to be with my children for the 2nd year didnt return and they were great! I have great hopes for this school and hope that the bad seed can be weeded out. The playground is so small and not geared toward the older students at all. Lunch is expensive

All staff knows every child by name, even if they don't have that child in their class. The school is only in it's second year, everyone needs to give the school a break. APS put a lot of restrictions on AXL as a new charter school, so they couldn't have hot lunches right away, but the program is going smoothly now. AXL could have more parent involvement and than maybe it would be an even better school, but the curriculm is great and challenging. Small school, that's what I love.

I love the fact that my child feels safe at school. I love the fact that 'older' children in the grades above him are considered mentors and not bullies. I love the fact that his teacher gives him education websites to visit and he can come home do his homework and still want to get on the computer to learn about adverbs, verbs, nouns over and over again!!!!

A SCHOOL is more than just greeting child. Just because the admin does this does not mean they have it all together. You need to get behind the door and observe, watch, then you will be able to better determine the validity of this charter school. My children are not attending. This was not a good decision we made & have chosen different avenue.

Not impressed with administration. They are not familiar enough with children that have any kind if learning challenge. In fact they scrutinize these children. They need to have some respect for the children and parents. Taking my children back to their old school.

I agree with the previous poster. So far, my experience has been positive and you have to consider how difficult it must be to start a school. Hot lunches are now in place, ahead of schedule BTW, and my child loves them! Teachers are great, and so is the admin staff. I participate in the classroom every week, and I'm very happy with dicipline, teaching methods, amount of homework and curriculum.

Considering AXL's only just starting their 2nd school year I think overall they have done a great job. I have read all of the reviews and I too have had my upsets around the administration and the way certain things have been handled, but like any new relationship or business it will take time to work out the kinks. When it really comes down to it I looked at what was important to me; it's simply that my children are in a safe environment that will not only teach them the fundamental skills of reading, writing etc., but will instill in them the importance of integrity, respect & responsibility, things that will provide a strong foundation to carry them thru life. AXL's dream for our children's future is bigger than any other school I know of & for that I think they are above most.

Everyone should be lucky enough to have their child attend AXL. It is like a small-town school. The principal and staff know greet EVERY child by name, every day. Expeditionary learning means that everything is relevant to your expedition. If you're studying tadpoles, you read, write, do math and learn Spanish about frogs. This makes it meaningful to the children. Spanish is taught every day from kindergarten up through middle school; not starting in middle school, like other public schools. I cannot say enough good things. Get your name on the list and prepare to be wowed!

I did fail to mention in my previous post how incredible the 3rd grade teachers, kindergarten teachers, and the lady at the front desk are-these ladies are the kindest, most caring, and talented people I have encoutered at the school.

Paernts are talked down to by the administrator and are not made to feel very welcome, even while being induced to volunteer. The educational concept of the school is great, but the enactment of the day to day is complete chaos! School needs more respect for and accountability to the parents.

treated as a child instead of a teacher.

The administration lacks alot when it comes to maing you feel welcome. They don't have consistent rules in place. Depending on the day, several children can literally get by withouth being properly disciplined. CHildren are singled out unfairly. Administration have been seen puling children across the floor because of inadequate behavoir. Administration yelling and slamminog doors. In adequate play area. They do not have a kitchen for hot lunches. You must have your child bring a sack lunch every day. I took my child out of school early in the school year it was such a joke.
